The administrative headquarters are in Juvigny-sous-Andaine.

geography

The place Lucé is six kilometers southeast of Domfront and in the south of the Orne department. The area is shaped by the landscape form Bocage and includes several small hamlets in addition to the core town. Lucé is not on a major river, but the watershed that separates the area of influence of the English Channel from that of the Atlantic runs through its area .

Until 2016, the neighboring communities of Lucé were Domfront in the west and north, La Baroche-sous-Lucé in the east and south and Avrilly in the southwest.

history

The existence of a settlement on the site of today's Lucé has been documented since the 4th century AD, even if the origins of the place probably go back even further. In the 4th century, on the instructions of Bishop Liborius of Le Mans, the first church was built, bearing the names of saints Saint-Gilles and Saint-Loup . In the Middle Ages, the place, which was then called Lucé en Passais , had a certain importance and was the seat of a baronnie who belonged to an English noble family; it comprised 19 settlements. You come from Richard de Lucy , who was an official of the English king. Under the French King Philip II , it was confiscated in the 12th century, placed under the rule of the nearby fortress town of Domfront and thus ultimately came under the influence of the French kings.

From the French Revolution , which began in 1789 , Lucé emerged as a self-governing municipality and at that time still included the district of Perrou . This then developed into a significantly larger suburb and gained its independence from Lucé in 1886. The newly created municipality no longer borders on Lucé, as an area belonging to La Baroche-sous-Lucé lies in between. Several British families later settled in Lucé, which is why the village has a significant proportion of English-speaking residents, given its small size.

Population development

Residents 186 152 136 129 125 103 79

During the French Revolution, the population was 584 in 1793. Then it rose to the historic high of 949 inhabitants in 1876. When the former district of Perrou was split off, the number fell to 301 in 1886, with around two thirds of the population being lost . This was followed by a continuous downward trend to 189 people who were counted in 1931. This development could not be stopped, so that in the early 21st century it fell below the mark of 100 residents.

Culture and sights

Near the church is a beech-covered hill that once housed a castle in the shape of a moth . From this, however, no building remains have been preserved. The current church building was built in the 17th century and has an arcade-shaped bell tower; like the previous church, it bears the name Saint-Gilles . Since Lucé was an important location for the nobility in the Middle Ages, there were once a total of three mansions in the municipality, none of which have survived. The last one presumably lasted until the early 17th century. What has been preserved, however, is an old lavoir , which was restored in 2012 and supplemented by a picnic area.
