As Zwickau Model A pilot project is to link between tram and railway referred to, wherein after Railway Construction and Operating Rules approved (EBO) and only slightly to the specifics of the tram adapted railway cars can be transferred to tram tracks. The only route so far is a connection in the eponymous Saxon city of Zwickau , where vehicles of the Vogtlandbahn run on a three- rail track of the Zwickau tram .

history

The Zwickau – Zwickau-Zentrum railway line from Zwickau Central Station to the center of Zwickau was opened on May 28, 1999. Between Zwickau main station and Zwickau Stadthalle, the route of the disused Reinsdorf industrial railway is used, the remaining section to the city center has been completely rebuilt so that the regular - gauge Vogtlandbahn trains can use common three-rail tracks together with the meter-gauge Zwickau trams between Zwickau Stadthalle and Zwickau center. However, rail and tram trains do not share a common platform edge . At the town hall and at the terminus “Zwickau Zentrum”, the Vogtlandbahn multiple units have their own platforms and they pass through the two intermediate stops “Steinkohlenwerk / Glück-Auf-Center” and “IHK / Saarstraße” without stopping.

In contrast to conventional tram-trains based on the Karlsruhe model , the route in Zwickau was designed in such a way that slightly adapted full-rail vehicles can be used. The Vogtlandbahn initially used RegioSprinter , which was later replaced by the same diesel- powered Stadler Regio-Shuttle RS1 . Both types of construction were adapted according to the requirements of the tram building and operating regulations . For example, they were equipped with brake lights, direction indicators , bells and transponders for operating points. On the tram side, there are Tatra KT4D and GT6M cars .

Because of their width, the Vogtlandbahn trains do not take part in road traffic. The busy Äußere Schneeberger Straße is largely closed to private motorized traffic. However, the covered track area is accessible for rescue vehicles and replacement rail traffic.
