The Zwickau (Sachs) Hbf – Zwickau Zentrum railway line is a branch line in Saxony , which was created as part of EXPO 2000 in 1999 as a model line for linking trams and railways in Zwickau , Saxony . The railway line known as the Zwickau model uses part of the former tracks of the Reinsdorf industrial railway . On the second section, due to the different gauges of the railway and the tram, it runs on a three- rail track together with the Zwickau tram to the center of Zwickau.

history

Railcar VT 45 with BO-Strab equipment at the end of the line in Zwickau center

The railway line from Zwickau (Sachs) main station to Zwickau city center was opened on May 28, 1999 as part of EXPO 2000 based on the " Karlsruhe Model ". The Zwickau model differs, however, in that the Vogtlandbahn trains do not run on the electricity of the tram , but with their usual diesel drive, as the Vogtlandbahn network is mostly not electrified. The RegioSprinter used were specially equipped for operation in accordance with the tram construction and operating regulations (BOStrab) with indicators and brake lights, as some of them move on the tram tracks. Due to their width, however, they do not take part in road traffic.

Between the Zwickau main train station and the Zwickau Stadthalle stop , a section of the disused Reinsdorf industrial railway was reactivated, from there to the Zwickau Zentrum stop , the tram and Vogtland trains use a common route. Due to the different gauges of the railway and tram routes, a three- rail track was laid on the shared route , the tram runs on meter , the Vogtlandbahn on standard gauge . Since the tram line was only being built at this point in time, a third rail and a larger track spacing could be planned right from the start, so that subsequent modifications were not necessary. However, railroad trains and trams do not share the same platform edge anywhere .

Route description

course

Zwickau, Äußere Schneeberger Straße as seen from the Brückenbergschachtbahn (2018)

Starting from Zwickau (Sachs) Hbf , the route initially follows the Schwarzenberg – Zwickau railway line . At the level of the W5 signal box, the track branches off in the direction of the Zwickau town hall. This section, which was reactivated for rail traffic, belonged to the Reinsdorfer Industriebahn , which was used exclusively for goods traffic , which originally ran as a coal railway to the hard coal shafts in the Reinsdorf corridor and was shut down after coal mining had ceased. Shortly before the newly created Zwickau Stadthalle stop, there is the infrastructure border between rail and tram Zwickau , where the rail traffic regulations change into the tram traffic regulations .

The Zwickau town hall, which opened in 2000, and the Glück-Auf-Center shopping center next to it in the Schedewitz district , were built on the site of the former coking plant and the Schedewitz collection station (freight yard), the area of which was cleared of all buildings after the coal mining industry ceased in the 1990s . The adjacent Zwickau Stadthalle stop was built in 1999 together with the construction of the new tram line to Neuplanitz .

Between the Zwickau Stadthalle and Zwickau Zentrum stops , the trains run along the Äußere Schneeberger Strasse due to the different gauge on a three- rail track together with the Zwickau tram . Due to the width of the rail vehicles used, Äußere Schneeberger Strasse was largely closed to motorized individual traffic. However, the covered track area is accessible for rescue vehicles and replacement rail traffic. A special feature of the shared route is that the railways and trams at the Zwickau Stadthalle and Zwickau Zentrum stops have their own platforms with different heights. The two stops in between “Steinkohlenwerk / Glück-Auf-Center” and “IHK / Saarstrasse” in Äußere Schneeberger Strasse are only served by trams. The Zwickau Zentrum terminus of the standard gauge line is located on Innere Schneeberger Straße by the city ring at the southern end of Zwickau's city center. Shortly beforehand, the tracks of the railroad and the tram, which continues into Zwickau's city center, separate.

Operating points

Zwickau (Sachs) central station

Zwickau (Sachs) main station

Zwickau (Sachs) Hbf is the largest railway junction in western Saxony. The station already had five different names during its operation, in detail these were:

  • until March 31, 1895: Zwickau
  • until June 30, 1911: Zwickau train station
  • until December 21, 1933: Zwickau (Sa)
  • until May 14, 1938: Zwickau (Sachs)
  • since May 15, 1938: Zwickau (Sachs) Hbf

The station was opened on September 15, 1845, after which the station soon developed into an important regional rail hub. In addition to passenger traffic, the station was also important for goods traffic and, due to mining in the Zwickau hard coal district, was for a long time the largest freight station in Saxony . With the cessation of mining and the economic decline after the fall of the Wall , the station has lost much of its former importance. Until a few years ago there was still long-distance passenger transport , today only local trains and the S-Bahn trains of Central Germany stop there .

The station is on the Dresden – Werdau , Schwarzenberg – Zwickau and Zwickau – Falkenstein lines . The Zwickau – Crossen – Mosel railway line , which is now partially closed, used to have its starting point there. Since December 2013, the station has been integrated into the Central German S-Bahn network.

Zwickau City Hall

Zwickau Stadthalle stop, railway tracks (2018)

The Zwickau Stadthalle stop was opened on May 28, 1999 under the name Zwickau Glück-Auf-Center in Schedewitz. After the opening of the Zwickau town hall in 2000, the name was changed to Zwickau town hall . The stop has separate platforms for the railway and tram line 3 ( Eckersbach –Stadtzentrum– Neuplanitz ), which run behind the station on a three- rail track in the direction of Zwickau city center. The former Zwickau-Schedewitz freight yard on the Reinsdorfer Industriebahn (coal railway) was not far from today's Zwickau Stadthalle stop . The tram has a turning loop right next to the stop. The platforms of the stop are covered.

Zwickau center

Zwickau Zentrum stop, standard lane platform

The Zwickau Zentrum stop was opened on May 28, 1999 on the southern edge of Zwickau's inner city. Shortly before entering the station, the tracks separate from the railroad and tram. While the railway has its end point here, the tram continues from here in the direction of the city center and Eckersbach. The platforms of the stop are covered.

Use of locomotives

RegioSprinter of the Vogtlandbahn in the Äußere Schneeberger Straße in Zwickau

In contrast to conventional tram trains based on the Karlsruhe model , the route in Zwickau was designed in such a way that slightly adapted full-line vehicles can be used. The Vogtlandbahn uses RegioSprinter , as well as the diesel- powered Stadler Regio-Shuttle RS1 , which have been specially converted in accordance with the requirements of the tram construction and operating regulations . For example, they were equipped with indicators, brake and dipped beam lights , direction indicators , bells and transponders for operating points. The Tatra KT4D and GT6M trams operate .
