Sikaran

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sikaran ( filipino for "kick") is the generic term for Filipino kickboxing .

The Filipino martial arts, known as Kali , Arnis , Eskrima , are weapon combat oriented. Accordingly, many styles have a comparatively low proportion of kicking techniques. Styles that are increasingly dedicated to kicking (sikaran) were probably influenced by immigrants and trade representatives from neighboring countries. Many techniques of Sikaran show a relationship to the Chinese Kuntao and the Thai Muay Thai .

If you combine the Filipino kicking techniques of the Sikaran with the Filipino Boxing Panantukan and the Filipino Wrestling Dumog , a complex and versatile unarmed martial art results.

One of the most widespread Filipino martial arts styles that increasingly deal with Sikaran is the Kali Sikaran.

Kali Sikaran

Kali Sikaran is the personal style founded in 1990 by Punong Guro Jeff Espinous. It is a modern mixed system with elements of different Southeast Asian martial arts. Above all, the disciplines Solo Baston (single stick), Doble Baston (double stick), Daga (knife), Espada y Daga (sword and dagger), Panantukan (phil. Boxing), Sikaran (phil. Kickboxing), Kadena de Mano ( phil. close combat, "trapping") and Dumog (phil. wrestling).

The Kali Sikaran values training with and without weapons equally highly. In contrast to numerous other Filipino styles, the unarmed techniques have a training share of around 50 percent. In order to make this fact visible to the outside world, the name suffix "Sikaran" was added to this Kali style. One could translate Kali Sikaran as a Filipino martial art ( Kali ) with an increased proportion of kickboxing elements (Sikaran).

The logo of the Kali Sikaran is the bull's head. If you look at the region between the Philippines , Indonesia ( Malaysia , Java , Sumatra ) and Thailand on a map, the geographical shape is reminiscent of the head of a bull. Originally a symbol of the Majapahit Empire (13th to 16th centuries), the bull's head has a strong meaning for the people of the region to this day. In the Kali Sikaran, the bull's head symbolizes that this Filipino style also contains elements of Indonesian Silat and Thai Muay Thai .

Kali Sikaran is a member of the world association IKAEF ( International Kali Arnis Eskrima Federation ) and is currently used in 14 countries (Australia, Belgium, Germany, England, France, French Polynesia , Greece, Italy, Lebanon, Morocco, Norway, Austria, Singapore, USA).
