The Kalinowski opossum ( Hyladelphys kalinowskii ) is a species of opossum that occurs in the three guayanas , in the Brazilian Amazon , in eastern Peru and possibly also in southeastern Colombia (surroundings of Leticia ) and in northern Bolivia.

description

The species reaches a head body length of 75 to 95 millimeters, a tail length of 102 to 117 millimeters and a weight of 10 to 20 grams, making it one of the smallest opossum rats. As the only member of her family, she has an even number of teats (four), the ears are orange, long, hairless and thin, the eyes are very large. The fur on the back and top of the head is reddish-brown, with the bases of the hair being gray. The cheeks are whitish, the eyes are surrounded by wide dark rings that extend forward to the nose and back to the base of the ear. The underside of the body is white to cream in color. The tail is hairless and colored brown. The paws are orange. The females do not have a pouch.

Habitat and way of life

The Kalinowski opossum lives in lowland rainforests. It is probably nocturnal and lives both on the ground and climbing in bushes. Nothing is known about their other way of life, their diet, their activity patterns and breeding biology.

Systematics

The Kalinowski opossum was scientifically described in 1992 by the US mammalogen Philip Hershkovitz , named after Celestino Kalinowski, who found the holotype near Cuzco , and initially classified in the genus Gracilinanus . In 2001 it was described by RS Voss, DP Lunde, and NB Simmons as a new genus, Hyladelphys . Genetically it differs significantly from all other opossum rats, but also specimens of the Kalinowski opossum collected in Peru and French Guiana differ so much that three cryptic species may be hidden under the name Hyladelphys kalinowskii .

Danger

The Kalinowski opossum is classified as harmless by the IUCN because of its large range .
