The lime works Miltitz is today as a visitor mine -used, disused lime - mine at Miltitz , community Klipphausen in Saxony .

geology

Geologically, the Miltitz area belongs to the Wilsdruff-Nossener Schiefergebirge , consisting of various clay slates with embedded limestone lenses . In the carbon , glowing magma penetrated the slate body from below and transformed the rocks through heat and pressure. At Miltitz the stored lime lenses were transformed into crystalline limestone, marble .

history

Limestone was probably mined in Miltitz for construction and fertilization purposes as early as 1400 . The mine was first mentioned in a document in 1571 . In the beginning, mining only took place above ground in the Blauer Bruch , at the beginning of the 19th century, mining began in civil engineering . In the following decades, the quarrying of the limestone extended over 4 levels to a depth of 60 meters. The impressive widening structures were also built at that time .

From 1865 a side tunnel , the Adolf-von-Heynitz-Stolln, was used to excavate a silver ore deposit adjacent to the limestone lens . The tunnel was abandoned in 1885 due to the low yield.

Shortly before the First World War , the minable supplies were largely exhausted. During the First World War broke a part of the mine from the surface to the fourth floor together, with four fatalities were lost. After the First World War, limestone mining was briefly resumed. In October 1924, production in the old lime mine was finally stopped and the pit filled with groundwater.

At the same time, mining began in a neighboring deposit in the New Lime Mine , which was in operation until 1962.

During the Second World War , in 1944 and 1945, the old mine served as a relocation facility for a gasoline factory under the code names Molch III and IV. The necessary distillation systems were built by concentration camp inmates under inhumane conditions. However, apparently no more production began before the end of the war. 17 prisoners driven to death are buried today in the Miltitz cemetery.

In the 1960s, extensive safety work was carried out on the old mining fields . Especially in the area of the railway line, all cavities were grouted with gravel.

Visitor mine

In July 2000, the then community of Triebischtal opened a visitor mine in the old lime mine , in which you can dive independently with the appropriate qualifications.
