KallistiOS

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

KallistiOS ( KOS ) is a free, on the BSD license -based development system for the Sega Dreamcast - game console , which is now free of a team software developer is developed over the Internet. The project was initiated by Dan Potter in 2000 .

KallistiOS enabled the creation of a large homebrew development community that is still active today at Dreamcast. In addition to creating free software, it was also used to develop some commercial games such as Last Hope , Feet of Fury, and Inhabitants.

A large number of hobby programmers published countless programs with the help of KallistiOS for the console, which was written off by the major manufacturers from 2002 at the latest, in total there are far more than 1000 different programs. There are also ports for PS2 and GBA, but these are unfinished and can only be used to a limited extent. KallistiOS is the successor to libdream , the first free developer library for Dreamcast. Libdream was also written by Dan Potter and published in mid-2000. It served as the basis for some hobby projects, but was soon replaced by KallistiOS.

KallistiOS and Kalisto

Even if the names are similar, the developers of KallistiOS have nothing to do with the Warez group Kalisto. Kalisto was the first group that managed to burn the Dreamcast GD-ROMs onto CD-Rs and play them in the Dreamcast without a boot disk.

pronunciation

Kallisti , from the Greek "to the most beautiful"; Kallisti OS (like Operating System); or the abbreviation KOS, which is pronounced like "chaos".
