Kallon of Elis
Kallon (also: Kalon ; Greek Κάλλων , * in the 5th century BC in Elis ) was a Greek bronze artist . It was around 400 BC. Active, but must have been before 436 BC. Have lived. His main work is a group anathema , reminiscent of a shipwreck that occurred on the occasion of the traditional participation of the city of Messana in a festival in Rhegion . When 35 young choir singers from Messana crossed to this festival, all participants including the leader and an accompanying flute player perished. Following the inscription on the anathem, Pausanias reports that the citizens of Messana donated the group that was set up in Olympia . Also known from Kallon from Elis is a statue of Hermes with Kerykeion in Olympia, which is said to have been donated by a Glaukias descending from Rhegion.
Kallon von Elis should not be confused with the sculptor of the same name from Aegina, whose activity took place between 500 and 460 BC. Is accepted.
