The Kalsubai or Kalsubai Peak ( Marathi : कळसूबाई शिखर) is a 1646 m high mountain peak in the Western Ghats in the Indian state of Maharashtra ; it is the highest mountain within a radius of several hundred kilometers.

location

The Kalsubai Peak is located between the megacities of Mumbai (approx. 150 km to the southwest) and Nashik (approx. 60 km to the north). The village of Baari , located approx. 5 km to the east and approx. 1000 m high, is mostly the starting point for summit tours.

At the top there is a domed and red-painted temple dedicated to a local goddess. Legend has it that Kalsubai was a maid who fled up the mountain from the pursuit of her master and disappeared here. On the occasion of the autumnal Navratri festival, which lasts several days , many pilgrims visit the mountain and the temple.

The Kalsubai Harishchandragad Wildlife Sanctuary , located approx. 10 to 20 km south and encompassing approx. 61 km², is very wooded. It is home to numerous small animal species and insects.
