Cold heading wire
As Kaltstauchdraht be rolled wires , drawn wires or rods of up to a diameter of mm referred to 100 that correspond to a defined range of materials. The requirements for the wire are regulated by EN 10263.
Materials and use
The materials used are unalloyed (e.g. C10C), boron-alloyed (e.g. 23MnB3), low-alloy (e.g. 34Cr4) and alloyed steels (e.g. 40CrMoV4.7).
Cold heading wires are produced in a wide variety of dimensions, designs, surface treatments and ring designs. The rolled wire can be used either directly or indirectly ( cold forming by cold drawing).
Depending on the requirements of the target product, further processing steps such as annealing or coating processes and drawing steps can be set. The surface of the cold heading wire depends on its further processing. Different surface finishes such as pickled, phosphated, soaped, boraxed, limed or polymer coated are used.
Cold heading wires are used in small sections, especially for cold forming , especially cold extrusion . Here, the wire is sheared off and brought into its final shape in a cold state, usually in several steps using multi-stage presses. The advantage of this manufacturing process is that no material is lost (the volume of the wire section and the finished part are identical).
The product is mainly used in the automotive industry, energy industry, mechanical engineering and the construction industry. Most screws are made from cold heading wires.
