history

The church was donated in 1735 by Georg Adam Krauß, master strap maker and councilor of Linz . He was born in Kemnath as the son of the Riemenschneider Martin Krauss and on December 9th, 1735 he donated 500 fl to the city for the construction of a chapel with a cross altar. The city council asked for the episcopal approval and commissioned craftsmen to determine a building site, to draw up a building plan and a cost estimate. The town miller Primian Kutzer donated a building site on his Bühlacker, the plan was drawn up by Mathes Weber. The church was completed in November 1738. The parish priest Orban did the inauguration of the church only after the citizens Franz Michael Mayer and Georg Krauss had agreed to pay 5 florins annually for the maintenance of the church.

The altar with the crucifixion of Christ was made by the sculptor Felix Dorsch and the carpenter Christoph Geißel. On December 30, 1741, the town miller Andrä Primian Kutzer was entrusted with the custody of the Calvari Berg . On May 6, 1746, Johann Eberhard Krauss, lawyer in Amberg and nephew of the founder, endowed the Kalvarienbergkirche with a capital of 740 fl, from whose annual income of 37 fl (= 5%) a weekly mass was to be paid.

In the course of secularization , the church was stripped of its jewelry and closed. Following petitions from the citizens, who had been working on repairing the church since 1822 (year above the portal), the ceremonial reopening of the church took place in 1830 with the approval of the government.
