Kamaka (ukulele)
Kamaka Hawaii, Incorporated , also known as Kamaka Ukulele or simply Kamaka , is a family-run Hawaiian company that makes ukuleles .
history
The company was founded in 1916 by Samuel Kamaka (1890–1953). He was the first to build ukuleles in the rounded shape of a pineapple (English: pineapple shape ). In 1928 he had this form patented. Today it is imitated by many other manufacturers.
The Honolulu company is still family-owned today. It is the oldest Hawaiian ukulele store still in existence. The company has received various awards and honors for its commitment to employing people with disabilities .
In addition to Kanilea , Koʻolau and KoAloha , Kamaka is one of the four K brands that manufacture high-quality instruments entirely in Hawaii. Mainly local koa wood is used.
Kamaka ukuleles are played by many professional musicians, including Jake Shimabukuro , Eddie Vedder and George Harrison . In the film 50 First Dates , Adam Sandler plays a kamaka ukulele.
Awards
In 2000, Samuel K. Kamaka was inducted into the Ukulele Hall of Fame , and in 2012 his sons Sam Kamaka Jr. (* 1921) and Fred Kamaka Sr. (* 1924).
