Die Kamerad was a ship built for the ferry traffic on the island of Spiekeroog in the Netherlands, which survived both world wars despite military use.

The ship

The bath and shipping company Spiekeroog needed a ferry in which passengers could also spend the crossing to the North Sea island protected inside the boat. Therefore, the Spiekeroog was commissioned and built for 36,000 marks at a Dutch shipyard in Amsterdam . In 1917 the ship was confiscated by the Imperial Navy and used for military purposes. In 1921 and 1922, the ferry was used again in Spiekeroog.

In 1923, the Spiekeroog was bought by the Julius Krümling company in Magdeburg, converted into a twin-screw motor tow and cargo ship and renamed Saale in 1924 .

In 1933 the ship was renamed Kamerad and used for freight trips in the North and Baltic Seas.

In 1939 the comrade was drafted for the second time for military purposes.

In 1965 the comrade was broken up in Nieuw Lekkerland.
