Kanach Sham ( Armenian Կանաչ Ժամ 'Green Church' , or Կանաչ Ժամ եկեղեցի ), officially Church of St. John the Baptist ( Սուրբ Հովհաննես Մկրտիչ եկեղեցի Hovhannes Mkrtich 'yekeghets'i ) is an Armenian apostolic church located in Shushi in the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic ; it stands over the hills of the Ghazanchezoz Cathedral .

Kanatsch Scham means "Green Church" in Eastern Armenian , it owes this to the fact that at one time the domes of the church were painted green . This church is sometimes mentioned with the name of the old church on the same place: Ղարաբաղցոց Gharabachzoz ("Karabacher"), in honor of the Nagorno-Karabakh farmers who built it.

According to the building inscriptions, the church was built in 1818 to replace the former wooden Gharabachzoz church (it existed in the lower eastern part of the fortified town in the second half of the 18th century). The inscription of the earlier church is engraved in the walls. The dome of the walled-up church and its chapel can be seen from a very long distance. The latter has numerous architectural innovations.

The church has the scheme of a cross shape . In the course of placing side chapels under the rising altar, the eastern facade of the church and the chapel attached from the west stand out with a unique interior decoration, thanks to which the monument was isolated from the analogue architectural constructions. Above the entrance, crowned with the dome of the chapel, is the inscription Babajan Stepanos Howanes. In memory of his late brother Mkrtitsch. Notched in 1847 .
