The Kanasi Lake ( Chinese 喀纳斯 湖 , Pinyin Kānàsī Hú ) or Kanassee is located in the Altai Mountains, in the Kazakh Autonomous District Ili in the north of the Uyghur Autonomous Region of Xinjiang in the People's Republic of China , at an altitude of 1374 m . The Mongolian name means "beautiful, rich and mysterious". This Zungenbeckensee has an area of 44.78 km².
For centuries there have been reports of eerie sea monsters attacking horses and cattle in the region. In 1985 fish with a length of up to 15 m and a weight of up to 4 tons were reportedly discovered in this lake. Then, in 1987, Xinjiang University employees examined the lake very carefully. However, only fish of one huchen species, so-called Taimen fish, which were three to four meters long were discovered.
Another expedition to the lake was started in September 2004, and the news went through the world press. However, nothing more was known of the results. It can therefore be assumed that these fabled monsters are also legends like the Loch Ness monster . In August 2005 a research group was commissioned to investigate the lake.
