The city's population is 55,632 according to the 2011 census. Kandi has a gender ratio of 956 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. The literacy rate was 82.1% in 2011. Almost 76% of the population are Hindus , approx. 23% are Muslims and approx. 1% belong to another or no religion. Children under 6 years of age are 10.6% of the population. Bengali is the main language in and around the city.
