The Kangerlussuaq Museum ( Danish Kangerlussuaq Museum , Greenlandic Kangerlussuup Katersugaasivia ) is the local museum of Kangerlussuaq .

history

The Kangerlussuaq Museum opened in 1997 and has long been privately organized. The building was owned by Mittarfeqarfiit . In 2015 the museum was connected to the Sisimiut Museum after it threatened to be closed and has been co-managed from there ever since.

building

The museum building has the building number B-1714. It was built in 1953 and initially served as a transit hotel for SAS Scandinavian Airlines . A little later it was taken over by the United States , which used it as the main administrative building of the Sondrestrom Air Base . In the 1990s, the US left the military base so the museum could take over the building.

exhibition

What makes the Kangerlussuaq Museum stand out in Greenland is that it does not focus on Greenlandic cultural history, but rather focuses on the history of the village as a former military base and today's Greenland Central Airport. It is above all an aviation and military museum. Early historical finds from the area are also dealt with, as well as the history of Kangerlussuaq as a research location in Greenland.
