The Sisimiut Museum ( Danish Sisimiut Museum , Greenlandic Sisimiut Katersugaasiviat ) is the local museum of Sisimiut .

history

The museum was opened in 1986 in Gammelhuset . In the years that followed, the museum took over more and more historical buildings in the area, so that it is now an open-air museum . In 2015 the Sisimiut Museum took over the Kangerlussuaq Museum , which has since been co-managed from Sisimiut.

building

The Missionary's Home (B-113) (2010)

The Sisimiut Museum today has the following buildings:

  • B-23 : The building used to be the home of the colonial administrator. Today it houses the museum shop and an exhibition.
  • B-25 : The former shop was built in 1825. Today the building serves as a magazine and exhibition space for special exhibitions.
  • B-32 : The building called Gammelhuset was built in 1754 at the old colony site Ukiivik and later moved to Sisimiut. After a restoration, it was the first building of the museum in 1986 and now houses exhibitions.
  • B-40 : The house for whalers was probably brought to Sisimiut in 1767. Today it serves as a museum magazine.
  • B-44 : The Halvvejshuset is a former packing house. Today the boat exhibition is located there.
  • B-54 : The old forge was built around 1900 and later received an extension that was used as a carpentry shop. The blacksmith's tools are now on display in the forge, while the carpentry is today's museum workshop.
  • B-113 : The pastor's apartment was built in 1759, later moved to its current location and originally served the missionary as a residence. Today the museum administration and library are located there.
  • B-114 : The old church, also called the Bethel Church or Blue Church, was built in 1775. Today it serves as an exhibition space.
  • B-1486 : The building is a 1993 reconstruction of an old peat wall house. For example, there are models of other peat wall houses on display, showing the development of this Greenlandic type of architecture over time.

With the exception of B-54 and B-1486, all buildings are protected. For detailed descriptions of the history and architecture of the individual buildings, see the list of architectural monuments in Sisimiut .

exhibition

The reconstructed peat wall house (B-1486) (2010)

The museum shows the following exhibitions:

  • An archaeological collection provides information about the Saqqaq culture , the first human settlement in Greenland.
  • An exhibition provides information about the UNESCO World Heritage Aasivissuit - Nipisat, which is close to Sisimiut .
  • One of the exhibitions shows the transformation of Sisimiut from a place full of hunters to the first Greenlandic industrial site.
  • In the church, the contrast between the traditional beliefs of the Inuit and Christianity in the early days of missionaryization is discussed.
  • From 1931, Sisimiut was the location of the first shipyard in Greenland. For this reason, the museum exhibits several boats.
  • The living conditions of the Greenlandic population around 1900 are shown in the reconstructed peat wall house.
  • The smithy shows how a Greenlandic blacksmith worked in the 20th century and discusses the history of Sisimiut in the early period of industrialization.
  • In addition, there are regularly changing special exhibitions on various topics.
