Kantiba

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kantiba was one of the oldest and most important titles in the Ethiopian administration.

In the 15th and 16th centuries it was awarded by the emperor to the administrators of Upper and Lower Hamasen , and later also by Dambiya . In the 17th century, the kantiba also set local taxes. Later the title completely lost its meaning in Northern Ethiopia, but was now given to the administrators of the city of Gonder . The last Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie (1930-1974) only awarded the title to the mayors of Addis Ababa , Asmara and Gonder and the administrators of certain areas (for example Mensa and Dambiya).
