history

When Sultan Kanuni Suleyman I (1520–1566) set out on his war of conquest for Szigetvár , but his army had difficulties crossing the lake, he ordered his architect to build a bridge. But since he died during the occupation of Szigetvár, the construction of the bridge was completed under his son Sultan Selim II in 1567.

During the construction work on the structure, which consists of four parts and 28 pedestals, the water from Lake Büyükçekmece was pumped out and 40,000 m³ of stones were laid. Between 1986 and 1989 the bridge was extensively restored and is now the landmark of Büyükçekmece.
