Kaonde

Kaonde is a Bantu people in northwestern Zambia and in small parts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo . Their language is ChiKaonde , a Niger-Congo language. They are descended from the Lunda .

Settlement area

The Kaonde live in the area around Mumbwa , Kasempa and Solwezi on the wooded plateau of the Zambezi River basin at an altitude of 1,220 m, in the southwest of which there are grass plains rich in game. Their number is estimated at 248,000 in Zambia and 36,000 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The copper production in Kansanshi in the 15th century is attributed to them, but this is not certain.

Social

It is still customary today among the Kaonde to marry girls between the ages of eight and thirteen, i.e. three to five years before they reach sexual maturity.

language

ChiKaonde is the language of instruction in the corresponding primary schools in Zambia. There are books, newspapers, radio broadcasts, farming guides and the Bible in Chikaonde.
