Geographical location of Kasempa

Kasempa is a place on the upper reaches of the Lufupa River and 100 kilometers north of the Kafue National Park in the Northwest Province of Zambia . It is 1134 meters above sea level and is the seat of the administration of the district of the same name with 44,002 inhabitants (2000 census).

economy

The district is dominated by subsistence farmers , but there is plenty of water, so fish farms are encouraged. Drinking water is a problem because there are no boreholes. So far, most of the people share the watering holes with the animals. Salt is extracted between June and November, which together with that from Kaputa has a domestic market share of 54.4 percent.

Infrastructure

Kasempa is considered to be one of the poorest and most isolated districts in Zambia. With four people per square kilometer, it is very sparsely populated. The capital Lusaka is over 800 kilometers away, but can be reached via the asphalted main road M8 . The roads to the capitals of the neighboring districts require four-wheel drive, only the roads to Mwinilunga and Chavuma are gravel roads. There are elementary and secondary schools, the latter with a boarding school, a 1000 meter long runway and a radio broadcast mast.

There is the Mukinge Hospital of the Evangelical Church, which has 200 beds and is trained as a nurse.

Social

The dominant tribe in the district are the Kaonde. Their annual traditional festival is the Nsomo ceremony.
