The geographic location of Chavuma in Zambia

Chavuma is a city with a good 20,000 inhabitants (officially unspecified) on the upper reaches of the Zambezi in the far west of the north -western province of Zambia . It is 1072 meters above sea level and is the seat of the administration of the district of the same name with 29,941 inhabitants (2000 census). The border to Angola is ten kilometers north. The M8 graveled from Kasempa leads through this city.

economy

Chavuma is a market town where merchants from both countries sell goods across borders. The city's proximity to the border has always shaped it. Cazombo on the Zambezi, about a hundred kilometers to the north, was a hotly contested location because of its asphalted, three-kilometer-long runway and an important supply route for UNITA . This made Chavuma repeatedly the target not only of waves of refugees, but also of attacks by UNITA. Until then, Chavuma was known more as a small village and a producer of rice, cassava, peanuts and corn.

The place has been connected to the national power grid since 2004, which spurred development. In a short period of time, permanent buildings were erected, companies founded and offices for representatives of government and associations established. The currency for this is apparently diamonds from Angola and cobalt from the not very distant Congo . The disorganization in Angola and Congo makes Chavuma the central logistical base of the neighboring provinces of the neighbors. For this income, the state-owned ZESCO built a complete power supply to Chavuma in just six months.

In 2005 and 2006, Chavuma was second to last behind Livingstone in the ranking of the number of people in need of food in the districts of Zambia. This is a very unusual number in this province and indicates a serious shift in the population in this city.

On October 23, 2006, the BBC reported that oil and gas had been discovered for the first time in Zambia. President Mwanawasa wants to win over foreign oil companies for detailed investigations of the areas in the districts of Chavuma and Zambesi .

Infrastructure

Chavuma has an unpaved, 1200 meter long air runway, a mission hospital, elementary and secondary schools.

tourism

Local attractions are the Chavuma Falls of the Zambezi, which are only a few meters high and in the rainy season are flooded by the river until they are invisible. In Zambia, however, they are the limit of the 800-kilometer-long upper course of the river, where it falls by only 180 meters.
