Kabompo is a place on the Kabompo River , a broad tributary of the Zambezi in the Northwest Province of Zambia . It is the seat of the administration of the district of the same name with 51,904 inhabitants (2000 census), in 1990 it was 60,164, so it is in decline. In 1914 this was 10,405. Since then, refugees from Angola have immigrated. There are refugee camps, but no exact numbers.

politics

In 2006 there were still many camps on the M8 with refugees from the Angolan civil war who are still to be repatriated but do not want to. The M8 road is considered to be the central smuggling route for cobalt from the Congo and diamonds from Angola.

economy

The district is characterized by Miombo forests with Zambezi teak and open floodplains. There are now 6,000 beekeepers. A GTZ project has set up the production and marketing of honey very successfully. Basic foods are cassava, corn and fish. Game meat and hardwoods are offered. Otherwise the district is hardly documented. There are suspected deposits of copper-cobalt-gold-uranium-iron (Kabompo Dome) and a few diamonds. 16 kilometers northwest of Kabombe are 1.4 million tons of limestone, as required in the cement industry and in agriculture.

Infrastructure

Kabompo has elementary and secondary schools and a 1200 m unpaved runway. It is officially 930 kilometers to the state capital Lusaka .
