Kapčiamiestis , in Polish Kopciowo , (German, 18th century: Methenburg ) is a small town ( miestelis ) in the Rajongemeinde Lazdijai in the extreme south of Lithuania , in the Dzūkija region , not far from the Polish and Belarusian borders. In 2011 the town had 589 inhabitants.
history
The settlement was founded in the 16th century. In 1516, the Polish-Lithuanian ruler Sigismund II Augustus handed over a forest area to Sidoras Kapočius, where he founded an estate. After that, a village also expanded on this.
Kapčiamiestis as a small town developed into a supra-local market town in the 19th century due to its location on important connecting roads to Suwałki and Grodno . Today the small town is located in a wooded area on the bank of the Baltoji Ančia (White Ančia) in a blind spot.
The Jewish community of Kapčiamiestis comprised about 50 families in the interwar period, including 18 craftsmen and 9 shopkeepers (= all shops in Kapčiamiestis). Almost all of them were taken to a camp near Lazdijai on September 15, 1941 and shot on November 3, 1941.
In Kapčiamiestis is the grave of the Polish-Lithuanian countess and freedom fighter Emilie Plater (Emilija Pliaterytė) (1806-1831).
