The Cape Arkona is a rocky headland on the southwest side of the island Heard in the southern Indian Ocean , it lies between the estuaries of the Song and Gotley glacier .
The cape was mapped in 1860 by the American seal hunter H. C. Chester, who was operating in the waters around Heard Island at the time. The SMS Arkona under captain Paul von Reibnitz explored the south coast of the island in February 1874. In Melbourne , Australia , von Reibnitz informed the Challenger Expedition about the results of his explorations, as a result of which the said cape appeared under the name given here in the maps of the British Admiralty.
