Cape Byron is the most easterly point of mainland Australia and is near the seaside resort of Byron Bay , New South Wales . The Cape Byron Lighthouse and various viewpoints offer a good view of the sea and the bays of Byron Bay. Cape Byron is regularly visited by humpback whales between July and November, making it a popular destination for whale watching . At the north end is Little Wategos Beach , to the southwest of it Wategos Beach .
In addition to a settlement area, most of the Cape Byron peninsula is protected as the Cape Byron State Conservation Area .
