Cap Lopez
The Cap Lopez is a flat headland or cape at the end of a peninsula on the Atlantic coast of West African Gabon , northwest of the city of Port-Gentil . The cape is the westernmost point of Africa south of the equator and the southern end point of the Bay of Bonny (formerly Bay of Biafra).
There is a lighthouse on the headland . There is also a Sogara oil refinery ( Société Gabonaise de Raffinage ) on the east side of the peninsula , as well as an oil port through which almost all of the export of this raw material from Gabon takes place. The operators are a consortium led by the French companies Total , ExxonMobil and Pizo- Shell . The port was built during the French colonial period in 1957/1958. In 1967 an oil refinery was also built. Oil production in Gabon, which was 17 million tons in 1998, fell to 12.5 million tons in 2003, with a further downward trend.
