The brightly colored splendor ( Aphyosemion australe ) is also known under the name Cape Lopez . It is a semi-anual species of fish whose eggs can develop both in water and in dry conditions. This species of killifish belongs to the family of the egg-laying toothcarps (Cyprinodontidae) and occurs mainly on the west coast of Africa ( Gabon ). A fully grown specimen is about 6 centimeters tall and can reach an age of three years. The sex difference can be recognized in the males by a clear coloration and extended fin tips. The females are slightly smaller than the males and have rounded fins.

Although it was not scientifically described by Rachow until 1921, it was first introduced to Europe alive in 1913 by M. Wolmer. This species has been reproduced continuously and in large numbers in human care for almost a hundred years.

Aquaristics

The multicolored marvel is well suited for a community aquarium with peaceful fish. Breeding is best done in a 50-liter tank, in the species tank also from 20 liters with soft water (0-20 ° dH) and at 22-26 ° C, with good planting and a dark substrate (e.g. peat) with many hiding spots and shading. In a breeding approach of two to three well-fed females and one male, reproduction should occur in a short time. For this purpose, a spawning mop is used, a perlon web in which the fish like to lay their eggs.
