Drawn Together is an American animated series that satirizes film and television . The crude humor with sex-related and violence is primarily aimed at an adult audience.
The series was developed by Dave Jeser and Matt Silverstein and produced by Comedy Central . It first aired on October 27, 2004.
In the UK the series about was MTV and Paramount Comedy aired in Australia on SBS . In Germany she was on MTV since May 3, 2006 . From March 2009 to October 2009, Drawn Together aired on VIVA . As a result, MTV took over the broadcast again. Since MTV has switched off the program on free-to-air television since January 1, 2011, Drawn Together was broadcast again on VIVA. VIVA stopped broadcasting in 2014.
action
The scope of action consists of the concept of reality shows , to accommodate different and unknown people in a common residential area and to allow them to be observed by cameras.
Comedy Central advertised that Drawn Together was the first animated reality show in which eight cartoon characters wanted to live together in one house. In some episodes, the characters have to face a few challenges based on real reality shows.
The series is aimed at an adult audience. There are, for example, often sexual allusions to Glory Hole , fisting , BDSM or urine fetishists . Several episodes have homosexuality as the main theme (such as hot tub and gay bash ) and are devoted to it in detail, especially in practically every episode there are corresponding jokes. The humor is largely satirical in nature, its primary focus being the reversal of political correctness . Prejudice , racism and sexism are greatly exaggerated, stereotypes are exaggerated and no taboo topic is left out.
The plot is largely based on breaking taboos on controversial topics such as abortion , rape , incest , racism , terrorism or the Holocaust , whereby the creators of Drawn Together deliberately transgress social norms in dealing with these topics. Most characters are portrayed as stupid or crazy; the way they act is often the opposite of what one would normally do. The parody of movies and television stereotypes is a common theme in this series; some drawn-together acts are allusions to well-known films or TV series, etc. a. Terminator , Muppet Babies or Kill Bill . Frequently used schemes from action films are also satirized, which also includes highly prominent logical action errors. Typical prejudices against US citizens of African descent , homosexuals or Jews are often presented. Allusions to the latter, however, were greatly reduced in the German-language synchronization of seasons one and two. The German adaptation of season three, on the other hand, remains very close to the original text , apart from the puns that are often difficult to translate .
characters
Captain Leslie Hero
Captain Hero is a Superman - adaptation with all of Superman known forces. However, in contrast to the submission, he has a weakness for alcohol and other drugs , is emotionally unstable, insecure and selfish. He is particularly noticeable for his pansexuality and his necrophilia , but has other sexual preferences that are difficult to classify and a tendency to infantile behavior. In the original English version, he uses numerous Hebrew words. His gay alter ego Tim Tommerson has a relationship with Xandir in one episode.
Captain Hero is mostly shown and named as a failure in the series . He is considered a typical chauvinist . It comes from a planet called Zebulon and was released as a baby. He has lived his entire life believing that his home planet had fallen into the sun and that he would be the only surviving Zebulonian. When he finally learns that his parents had "aborted" him with a space probe because he would become the "most desolate superhero" ever born, he actually throws Zebulon out of anger into the sun.
Princess Clara
Outwardly, Princess Clara corresponds to the scheme of a typical ( naive ) Disney princess such as Cinderella , Arielle or Snow White , who are her best friends. She sings adorable, is the friend of all animals and at the beginning of the series looking for a prince. In addition, she is naive and also openly racist , homophobic , Christian fundamentalist , anti-Semitic and shows signs of symphorophilia . She has a mentally retarded but extremely sexually attractive cousin named Bleh . Her father, the king , also appears in some episodes .
Her vagina has turned into a tentacle monster, which she calls octopoussoir herself, following a curse cast by her stepmother . In one episode she tries to find a prince through a casting show despite this flaw, later the octopoussoir is surgically removed - whereupon it leads its own life, marries and starts a family.
Toot brownstone
Toot Braunstein is a black and white Betty Boop periflage in the role of a "cartoon sex symbol of the 1920s". It is characterized by eating disorders that extend to consuming indigestible objects and cannibalism , as well as alcohol addiction , masochistic traits and a tendency to self-harm . She is often portrayed as particularly ugly and neglected, but above all extremely overweight. She tries again and again to seduce men, but only very rarely succeeds. In one episode, however, she manages to seduce all Indian men because they consider her a sacred cow. Especially at the beginning of the series, she tries to seduce the homosexual Xandir. Her malice towards the other residents of the house spreads over the course of the series, especially in the third season, more and more to Princess Clara.
Foxxy Shaquafa Love
Foxxy Love is a black, "puzzle-solving musician" (parody of Beyoncé Knowles and Valerie Brown by Josie and the Pussycats and the Scooby-Doo characters of Mystery, Inc. , as well as Foxy Brown in name ). She has a fox tail sitting over her bottom, whereby the representation of whether it is a part of the body or a part of her clothing is contradictory within different episodes. The same goes for the fox ears on her baseball cap. She is bisexual and corresponds to the cliché of the black, angry alpha female. Their attractive appearance and very skimpy clothing are based on the image of black women conveyed by parts of the hip-hop culture. Often allusion is made to her scarce schooling, but in contrast to this she shows extraordinary skill in solving problems. Foxxy is considered a believer, but not Christian fundamentalist like Princess Clara. Their main characteristic is their high level of sexual activity, which has resulted in an indefinite number of offspring, including a teenage grandson.
Foxxy has two children named Kwametta and Ray-Ray, named Kwametta and Ray-Ray, as well as a son Timmy, who acts as a running gag by often confusing him with different, contradicting fates, always closed by her tear-choked statement: "Poor little Timmy ... mom misses you so much! " Furthermore, Foxxy suffers from the loss of her father, whom she actually meets again in one episode. After a short period of togetherness, her father goes to get cigarettes in order not to return, which Foxxy cannot or does not want to realize.
Spanky Ham
Spanky Ham is an internet - cartoon character in the shape of a pig, a parody spread on the Internet, often simply drawn Flash animations. He is coprophilic , cynical , sarcastic , with a pronounced tendency toward political incorrectness and fecal humor; he also loves to cheat and take advantage of others. Spanky Ham has an anatomically correct pig penis, which straightens up when excited. Before the events of September 11th, he converted to Islam .
Ling-Ling
Ling-Ling is an adaptation of the Japanese fighting monster Pikachu from the game Pokémon and Persiflage on other anime characters . He speaks an incomprehensible pseudo Japanese - gibberish with subtitles, briefly also English or German, corresponds to the cliché of the math-gifted, hardworking and self-sacrificing Asian who strives for fame and honor and drives terribly bad car. He prays to L. Ron Hubbard occasionally .
Another specialty of Ling-Ling is that he fights with the female "monsters" before intercourse. In addition, when disappointed, it secretes a hallucinogenic substance. His tail, which is in the form of an exclamation mark, can be used as a sword by him if necessary , sometimes turns into a question mark or, when he is angry, becomes a mishmash of characters, as is often found in comics (# * ! ~ +?). Through his martial arts (an allusion to the characters of the anime series Dragonball and Pokémon ) he has already been able to save his roommates at one point or another. He would also like more recognition from his father (like Clara) and the other roommates.
Also noticeable is his distinctive speech error, in which he always pronounces the "L" like an "R". Whenever he speaks of himself in the third person, he calls himself a “ring ring”. This twisted speech error is an allusion to the problems Asians have with the pronunciation of the "R", after which it always sounds like an "L".
Xandir P. Wifflebottom
Xandir is the adaptation of a typical fantasy video game hero. He is homosexual , but initially driven by the "eternal mission to save his girlfriend " (never-ending quest to save his girlfriend). In the episode Gay Bash , Foxxy Love organizes a gay orgy for him. This is how Xandir notices his homosexual tendencies. At first he finds it difficult to deal with this knowledge and he wants to commit suicide. However, since he has numerous lives as a character from a video game, his suicide attempts fail and he finally comes out as homosexual.
He seems to be the only one who takes life together in the house seriously. He also has a weakness for self-pity, romantic poems and rubber ducks. At first he is the victim of Toot's desire, but then he befriends mainly Captain Hero, with whom he also shares a bedroom, but no bed. In one episode, his parents are depicted as living in an area that mimicked the Shire from Lord of the Rings .
Ball of wool sock beard
Ball of wool socks Bart (Original: Wooldoor Sockbat ) is an adaptation of SpongeBob SquarePants , Ren and Stimpy , and the Looney Tunes and suffering allegedly under the attention deficit hyperactivity disorder . Although he seems to be the craziest character in the shared apartment at first glance, he can also act as a surgeon , pastor , psychologist , family doctor or other highly qualified expert if necessary .
He experiences puberty in the second season . His typical exclamation of enthusiasm is “Huu-Wiiiii!”. According to his own statement, he has to let off this exclamation every 30 seconds, otherwise he will choke on his own stomach acid. He is the best friend of Princess Clara and Spanky Ham, who, especially in the second season, repeatedly exploits him, pokes fun at him and incites him to commit crimes. When he ejaculates through masturbation , he secretes so-called "clumbabies" from his mouth, which can cure all diseases (an allusion to the debate on stem cell research ). Before he became a woolly sock beard, he was just a normal boy named Walter Saget.
Recurring minor characters
The king
The king is the father of Princess Clara, who appears in several episodes, but his name is not revealed. His appearance is similar to that of King Triton (father of the mermaid Ariel ). His racist views were adopted from Clara; she looks up to him and always fights for his recognition. The king never seems to understand her properly, because he justifies a lot with the statement that Clara is a princess and therefore behaves like that. He is particularly fond of striptease , which he calls ballet and prefers family responsibilities. Instead of celebrating her birthday with Clara, he goes to the local entertainment establishment. At most, he shows an incestuous interest in his daughter, which neither of them perceives as pathological.
The money-hungry producer
(Original: The Jew Producer , "The Jewish Producer")
The money-hungry producer determines the course of the show, gives appropriate instructions and is therefore the incarnation of the makers Dave Jeser and Matt Silverstein - who are both of Jewish faith - within the show. Most of the time it can only be heard through a loudspeaker. When he appears, he is a short man in a blue suit, who wears this loudspeaker instead of a head and whose red-blonde hairstyle is based on the appearance of Donald Trump's head. As part of a Big Boss parody at the end of the first season he acts, in disguise as a billionaire Buckie Bucks , as a direct parody of Donald Trump, where he each time repeating the "you're fired!" (Original: You're fired! ) ejaculated into his pants . Similar in the sequel, in which he allows the residents to move back into the house if they play "Simon says" (" Simon says ") with him - only with the intention of humiliating them again. During the final episode of the third season, American Idol Parody Clip Show , he commits suicide in Off camera , an indication of the possible end of the series.
Octopussoir
When Clara was a little kid, her wicked stepmother put a curse on her vagina. Through this curse she turned into a male, speaking multi-tentacle monster (an allusion to many Hentai - films ). Despite its terrifying appearance (which makes anyone vomit who sees it, as well as anyone among the assembled princes who kisses it, except their chosen princes), the Octopoussoir is actually quite amiable, unless it is startled or started by loud noises provoked in some way. Clara has her vagina changed in the second season through a cosmetic operation, whereupon she converts to Judaism and moves into her own house; there his intelligence is shown (through glasses and sophisticated language). The Octopoussoir then leads a happy, separate life.
Bleh
Bleh is Princess Clara's mentally retarded cousin, whose condition is the result of her mother's alcohol abuse during pregnancy. She usually wears a football helmet for head protection, has a cross-eye, and has trouble controlling her saliva. Their language consists mainly of hard-to-understand press reviews of the film Ich bin Sam . However, the rest of her body is flawless, which gives her strong attractiveness and makes her an object of lust for Captain Hero. She also has good reflexes . In the episode Ghostesses in the Slot Machine , she can be seen briefly as a player at a blackjack game table in a Rain-Man parody .
Judge Fudge
Judge Fudge is a parody of the often black judges on various court shows of the 1970s. Its appearance is, as its name suggests, that of a caramel bar in a judge's robe. His own television show, Judge Fudge Adventure Power Hour , is a parody of the shows themselves. He's pretty incapacitated every time he shows up because, he says, he's always “way too busy admitting extraordinarily delicious his "(Original: " I'm far too busy being delicious " ). In the episode The Drawn Together Clip Show , he is presented as the winner of last year's Drawn Together season. The episode NRAy Ray gives him the opportunity to take a more active role in convicting Foxxy. However, for a known reason, there is no judgment.
Jun-Jee
Jun-Jee is Ling-Ling's father. His appearance is similar to that of Ling-Ling, with the difference that he is slightly taller, has a darker skin color, and has kinked ears and a kinked tail. In addition, Jun-Jee has a typical “Chinese mustache” and thorn-like spines from the head and down the back. Similar to his son Ling-Ling, he secretes a hallucinogenic secretion when he is disappointed. He made his first appearance in the episode The Other Cousin. He was invited to make amends by Xandir, Toot and Ball of Wool for using Ling-Ling as a drug . He had his second visible appearance in the episode Freaks & Greeks. After Jun-Jee attempts suicide, Ling-Ling is able to convince him to move into the Drawn Together house, whereupon he falls madly in love with Toot and marries her. In this episode he speaks English (German in the German version) with an Asian accent , which he did in the episode Clum Babies (even if only on Ling-Ling's answering machine), although he (like Ling-Ling) in The Other cousin still spoke Japanese gibberish . This tells you in Freaks & Greeks that "Jun-Jee" , which can already be heard in The Other Cousin , is his name.
Steve from Long Island
Steve is a always casual young man with sunglasses. When he first appeared in Clum Babies , he was referred to as "Ling-Ling's stupid friend Steve". In Mexican't Buy Me Love , however, he is one of the “cool kids”, although his character traits have not changed noticeably. Little is known about Steve's life, except that he regularly goes to clubs and got to know Ling-Ling. During his second appearance, however, he does not appear with Ling-Ling, and their friendship is not mentioned. He is often with one or two attractive young ladies.
publication
Drawn Together was produced by Comedy Central and first aired on October 27, 2004.
In the UK , the series aired on MTV and Paramount Comedy , while in Australia it was broadcast on SBS . In Germany she has been on MTV since May 3, 2006 .
In March 2007 it was announced that Dave Jeser and Matt Silverstein have terminated their contract with Comedy Central and signed a two-year contract with the broadcaster FOX . A fourth season of Drawn Together was still possible, but unlikely. Meanwhile, Tara Strong has confirmed that there will be no fourth season. In January 2008, the contract between FOX and the two authors was terminated during a writers' strike .
In America, all three seasons have been released on DVD. Some of the DVD versions have additional scenes and, in contrast to the TV version, are largely uncensored. A German publication came out on October 28, 2011. This version, dubbed the hybrid version by the manufacturer, will not contain any black bars. Edited scenes without dialogue are integrated directly into the sequence. Censored scenes with dialogue will be subtitled in the bonus material.
A film version of the series was released as a direct-to-DVD production on April 20, 2010 under the title The Drawn Together Movie: The Movie! in the USA .

music
Like the characters on the show, the background music also reflects clichés. For example, (supposedly) tragic moments are accompanied by sad piano music, in pathetic moments there is a brass version of "Amazing Grace". Mysterious scenes are generally accompanied by the piano melody of the song Shark Side from the horror thriller Deep Blue Sea . You can also hear pieces from Star Wars quite often . In surprising moments of happiness, the motif joy, beautiful spark of the gods from Beethoven's 9th Symphony is used again and again .
In some episodes, the protagonists themselves comment on the plot, mostly with song based on musicals. For example, in the episode Hot Tub , Princess Clara and Foxxy sing a song about the French kiss they exchanged.
