The Nothobranchiidae are a family of African toothfish (Cyprinodontiformes). They used to be counted among the Cyprinodontidae and are therefore called toothcarps (killifish) like these egg-laying fish. They live in fresh water, more rarely in brackish water. They are small fish from 2.5 to 13 centimeters in length. Most of the approximately 250 species remain under 10 centimeters.

Some species also inhabit bodies of water that are only temporarily present, which form in the rainy seasons and dry out in the dry seasons , whereby the eggs of the fish survive in the mud. These species are known as seasonal fish or annual killifish. However, because of the conditions in their home waters, these animals are comparatively short-lived.

Aquaristics

A number of popular aquarium fish come from the Nothobranchiidae family . Male fish in particular are extremely colorful and beautifully drawn, which explains their popularity with aquarists . Some of the animals are quite aggressive towards their fellow species as well as towards foreign fish, which is why they should preferably be kept in a species tank. There it is recommended to keep 1 male with several females. In larger tanks, several males can usually be kept together.
