The Cyprinodontidae are a family of the toothfish (Cyprinodontiformes). The fish live in rivers, ponds and small waterholes in the southern United States from California to Florida and Mexico .

features

They are 3.5 to 9 cm long and have a rather compact shape. The beginning of the dorsal fin base lies in front of that of the anal fin. Overhead outgrowths of the maxillary are enlarged medially and meet almost in the middle. The part of the maxillary facing away from the middle of the body is enlarged. Your second pharyngobranchial (part of the gill skeleton) stands tall relative to the third. The Meckel's cartilage is extended backwards, the parietal bone is missing. The jaw teeth are in a row. The fertilization takes place externally.

Diagnostic features that distinguish the Cyprinodontidae from other toothbreds are the special attachment of the first vertebra on the skull and the teeth on the pharyngobranchialia (uppermost bone of the gill cage), which are arranged in individual rows.

Systematics

The Cyprinodontidae family was introduced in 1865 by the American ichthyologist Theodore Nicholas Gill . Originally, the family comprised all egg-laying toothcarps as opposed to the viviparous toothcarps . After various revisions , the name is only correct for a small number of these fish. After the spin-off of the Mediterranean pennies ( Aphanius ), the Andean pennies ( Orestias ) and the genus Cubanichthys from the Greater Antilles, only six genera and 55 species , 49 of which belong to the genus Cyprinodon, are included in the family.
