In terms of developmental history, the desert harpsichord of North America are primitive killifish .

They belong to the genus Cyprinodon , whose range extends from the deserts of California and Nevada through Texas and Arizona to Mexico .

Many of these species have to cope with severe changes in their living conditions in nature. The salinity in these desert waters often changes significantly over the course of the year. In summer, the salts concentrate strongly due to the evaporation of the water, only to be diluted again in rare, but sometimes heavy, rainfall. The water temperatures are also subject to strong fluctuations: the difference between the maximum temperature during the day and the minimum value at night can be 20 ° C and more.
