Cubanichthys (etymology: "Cuba" + "ichthys" = fish) is a genus of the toothfish (Cyprinodontiformes) with onespecieseach endemic to Cuba and Jamaica .

features

Cubanichthys species are 6 to 8 cm long and have a rather compact body. The beginning of the dorsal fin base lies in front of that of the anal fin. The fins of the males are enlarged. The four diagnostic features that distinguish the genus from other tooth species relate to skull morphology. The supraoccipital (skull bone) has an enlarged ridge and a third sensory pore , the autopalatinum, a pair of bones in the palate of the fish, is enlarged and the posttemporal (posterior temporal bone) has no ossified lower branch. A parietal bone is present. The number of vertebrae is 27; the number of scales along the sideline is 24 to 26, and the number of Branchiostegal rays is 6.

Systematics

The Cuban species was described in 1903 by the German-American ichthyologist Carl H. Eigenmann under the scientific name Fundulus cubensis . In 1926 the genus Cubanichthys was introduced for this species by the ichthyologist Carl Leavitt Hubbs . In 1939 the zoologist Henry Weed Fowler described the Jamaican species as Chriopeoides pengelleyi . Parenti synonymized Chriopeoides with Cubanichthys in 1981 and established a separate subfamily (Cubanichthyinae) within the Cyprinodontidae for the genus . Because of the polyphylie of the Cyprinodontidae, the Cubanichthyinae were finally raised to the rank of an independent family in mid-2017.
