Maria Wil chapel

The Maria Wil Chapel (also called Mariawil ) is a pilgrimage chapel in Baden , Switzerland . It is located northwest of the city center in the Kappelerhof district, on the main road to Brugg . The part of the name Wil goes back to the former place name Oberwil .

Maria Wil was created on a private initiative, was consecrated on April 22nd, 1603 by Johann Georg von Hallwyl , the then Bishop of Constance , and replaced by a new building in 1661/62. The chapel was mainly used for pilgrimage. A comprehensive renovation was carried out from 1764 to 1766, with the chapel being stuccoed by Christian Scharpf. The estimated costs were massively exceeded, so that the previously independent chapel became dependent on the parish church .

The baroque chapel with its rococo - equipment is 26 meters long and 10.9 meters wide. The south-facing choir is precisely cube-shaped (each 8.8 meters long, wide and high). A full gable roof unites the nave and choir. An octagonal roof turret with an onion dome rises above it . Today the chapel mainly serves as a prayer room for a small brotherhood of Redemptorists in the immediate vicinity, but is also used by the Roman Catholic parish of Baden.
