Building history

The village of Wagen is mentioned for the first time in 870 and was part of the Rapperswil court community of Jona until 1819 . Kirchherr was the prince abbot of Einsiedeln , who shared the manorial power with the monasteries Wurmsbach and Pfäfers . The first church building should have been built in the 11th century. In contrast to the surrounding branch churches of the large parish of Busskirch , Wagen formed a parish incorporated into the Benedictine monastery in Einsiedeln since the 14th century . In 1698 the small church building was consecrated to St. Wendelin . After the founding of the canton of St. Gallen, the legal relationships between Wagen and Einsiedeln were dissolved, and from 1804 a band cooperative managed the finances and was responsible for the upkeep of the chapel.

In 1951 the old church building was replaced by a new one designed by the architect Joseph Steiner from Schwyz. In the 1960s, the furnishings were redesigned according to plans by the architect Norbert Bühler from Jona. The new altar was consecrated on Easter Monday 1980. The interior restoration of the village chapel in the summer of 1998 included cleaning the heavily soiled walls, the wooden ceiling, the windows and figures as well as painting.
