Chapel of the Holy Spirit in Bichl

The Chapel of the Holy Spirit is a listed ( list entry ) Roman Catholic chapel in the Bichl fraction of the Tyrolean community of Prägraten am Großvenediger ( Austria ). The core of the baroque church dates from the 17th century.

history

The chapel goes back to a building from the 17th century, which was expanded in 1752 by a resolution of the neighborhood of Bichl. The chapel was consecrated on August 21, 1759. When numerous churches and chapels were closed in the course of the Josephine reforms in 1786, the closure of the Chapel of the Holy Spirit was prevented. The chapel was renovated between 1992 and 1994 by Wilfried Waltl.

Building

The chapel is located on a small hill within the village of Bichl in the middle of a meadow. The houses of the faction are grouped around the chapel at a distance of around 50 meters. The building was erected over a rectangular floor plan and has a polygonal end. The outer walls are plastered in white and have a yellow framing structure, with a wrought-iron gridded arched window in the longitudinal walls and in the sloping choir. The chapel is protected by a clapboard, steep saddle roof, above which a wooden clapboard roof turret protrudes on the entrance side. The roof turret has arched sound windows protected by wooden shutters and a slightly curved pyramid roof, which is crowned by a ball, cross and weather valve. The entrance-side portal has a flat arch and is flanked by a wrought-iron grille. Above that there is an arched window in the gable field.

The ceiling was designed as a flat barrel vault with wide straps over a profiled cornice, the ceiling painting was created in 1905 by Josef Weiskopf . The ceiling painting shows the IHS initial surrounded by a halo with putti heads and the four evangelists flanked. In the choir there are two cartouches decorated with leaf decoration, which show King David and Saint Cecilia . The floor of the chapel is made of wood, with the sanctuary raised by one step.

The equipment of the chapel consists of a high quality, baroque inventory. The wooden altar with green-blue marble and blue chandelier mounts was made around 1750. The altar panel shows the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, with Mary being shown surrounded by the disciples, over whom the dove of the Holy Spirit hovers. In the extract there is an oval medallion with relief showing the coronation of Mary by the Holy Spirit. The wooden figures in the pillars represent St. Anthony (left) and St. Peter (right).

The wooden pews in the chapel date from the 18th century, the paintings of the Stations of the Cross in oil on canvas from the third quarter of the 18th century. There are also statues of St. Blaise, St. Benedict and a crucifixion group in the chapel, as well as a holy spirit dove, a figure of Mary and a figure of the Good Shepherd in the prayer room. In addition, paintings that show Christ on the Mount of Olives or the Man of Sorrows , St. Florian and an enthroned Mary with child are part of the equipment. The bells of the church were melted down during the two world wars and replaced each time.
