The chapel is the urban and spiritual center of the circular upper Bavarian city Altötting .

In the center of the polygonal square is the eponymous Chapel of Grace with the Black Madonna. On the south side is the collegiate parish church with attached chapels. The eastern side of the square is determined by the Jesuit church and the St. Magdalena monastery with the congregation hall. The north side of the square is dominated by the town hall , the Hotel zur Post and the deanery . There are former canons' houses on the west side.

Together with the pilgrimage shops and two free-standing fountains, Kapellplatz is a listed building as an ensemble.

It has been a destination of Roman Catholic pilgrimages since the Middle Ages . On November 19, 1980 Pope John Paul II celebrated a service on the square in front of 60,000 believers.
