Hotel zur Post (Altötting)
The "Hotel zur Post" is a more than 700 year old hotel in Altötting in Upper Bavaria, making it one of the oldest restaurants in Bavaria .
history
Mentioned for the first time in 1280, the house played its role as a courtyard tavern for centuries. In the times of the stagecoach it was a relay station on the route between Munich and Vienna and also served as accommodation for princely pilgrims, cardinals, bishops, archdukes and kings.
In 1630 the inn burned down due to a fire in the riding stables and with it seven other houses "on the farm" (Kapellplatz). In 1646 a new building was built, which was completely redesigned from 1685 to 1688 by the famous Italian master builder Enrico Zuccalli ( Nymphenburg Palace ) in the Italian Baroque style. An Italian-style pleasure garden was added and the stables were enlarged. The entire Zuccalli family was involved in the redesign.
- (...) In 1685 Domenico Cristoforo Zucalli raised the Hofwirthschaftstaferne on the north side of the Kapellplatz, the current Mayer'schen Gasthof zur Post, by one gaden. (Chapel bill 1685)
The economy has been freely owned since 1830 and has been called "Gasthof zur Post" ever since. The building complex is a listed building due to its architectural and historical importance.
After a renovation with the help of public funds, Gerold Tandler acquired the hotel in 1976, financially supported by Eduard Zwick , who became known as the “spa king” . Since then it has been owned by the Tandler family.
In August 2019, the hotel was auctioned off for 4.25 million euros and got a new owner. The VivaPLAN group of companies from Nittendorf near Regensburg bought the traditional house and is currently undergoing extensive renovation. Hotel director Peter Heimerdinger runs the new Hotel Zur Post in Altötting. Planned opening: late 2020 / early 2021.
Others
In the Altötting crime novels by Anton Leiss-Huber , the hotel appears as a setting at various points, because investigator Max Kramer grew up there throughout the story. Already in the first book, Max's father has no understanding of his son's career in the criminal investigation department and would rather see him as a restaurateur. "(...) We have been the postmen here for more than nine generations, and I don't want to accept that I should be the last."
