Chaplaincy

The chaplaincy is a listed building in Merenschwand in the canton of Aargau . It stands in the center of the village and, together with the parish church of St. Vitus and the rectory, forms a historical group of buildings on the southern edge of the cemetery.

The stately three-storey building in late Gothic style was built in 1491 on behalf of the Kappel Monastery , whose monks were in charge of the parish at the time. At first the chaplaincy had two floors. In 1774, master builder Vitus Rey from Muri carried out a renovation and added heights to the building. The floor plan of the chaplaincy is almost square; Above it rises a cubic structure with 5 × 2 axes, covered by a kinked hipped roof with hatches on the south side. The portal is arched with a horizontal skylight . A fireplace on the top floor and a tile painted by Caspar Wolf with the vedute in the corridor, on which the converted building is depicted, date from the time of the renovation.
