The Kaptai National Park is a national park in Bangladesh , which is located in the Rangamati district between the Karnaphuli and the mountains of Kaptai and has been a protected area since 1999 . The area of ​​the national park covers 5464 hectares , it is administered by the Chittagong Hill Tracts Southern Forestry Division and has IUCN protection status II.

Landscape conditions

Kaptai National Park is located in the hilly area of ​​the Rangamati Hill Tracts . There are numerous natural springs in the area of ​​the park, which extends to the banks of the Karnaphuli .

The Kaptai National Park is largely overgrown with tropical wet and monsoon forests. The trees found in Kaptai National Park include the teak tree and the parul tree ( Stereospermum chelonoides ).

According to a study by Jahangirnagar University , half of the species naturally occurring in Bangladesh are found in Kaptai National Park. The researchers found 62 different mammal species , 17 of which are threatened with extinction worldwide. For example, Asian elephants , western white-browed gibbons and northern pig monkeys can be found in the area of ​​the national park - all animals that are listed as threatened on the IUCN red list . The study also listed 358 species of birds , including the blue-billed flycatcher , which was previously believed not to be found in Bangladesh, and 74 species of reptiles , including four endangered species of tortoise . Of the 38 amphibian species found, the northern frog ( Occidozyga borealis ), which is also threatened with extinction, is particularly worth mentioning. Among the fish species in the national park, the Mahseer from the carp family and the paradise fish are particularly noteworthy. The various plants also make the national park an ideal habitat for different types of butterflies . Artipe eryx , Tajuria jehana , Suada swerga , Libythea myrrha and Scobura isota are particularly worth mentioning here .

In a 2015–2017 study, biologists found 25 plants with different degrees of protection in Kaptai National Park.
