The Karfreit-Kaserne is a former barracks of the army of the Bundeswehr in Brannenburg in the state of Bavaria . The barracks was named after the Battle of Good Freit in the First World War .

history

In the course of the armament of the Wehrmacht , the Karfreit barracks were built in the Degerndorf district (near "Kreuzfeld") in 1935/36 . Builders from Brannenburg-Degerndorf and the surrounding communities were active. The Brannenburg-Degerndorf garrison housed the 1st Battalion of the 100 Mountain Infantry Regiment from 1936 ; During the Second World War, spare and training units were located here. After the occupation (1945-1958, US and British troops), the Bundeswehr took over the barracks. Until 2010, the Mountain Pioneer Battalion 8 (GebPiBtl 8) with five companies, more than 1,000 soldiers and around 200 civilian employees was stationed there.

The Mountain Pioneer Battalion 8 is the only mountain pioneer unit in the Bundeswehr . Soldiers from this unit have proven their skills and abilities in several mountain rescue operations in the Inn Valley as well as in relief missions at home and abroad. In 2010 the Karfreit barracks were dissolved and the barracks area was subsequently released by the Federal Republic for conversion for civil purposes. The mountain pioneers were relocated to Ingolstadt .

The Soinhütte high mountain base in the Wendelstein area, which is part of the Karfreit barracks, remained in military use. The water exercise area on the Inn with saddle places and boat harbor is still a reminder of the many years of pioneer training in the Inn Valley.
