Good Friday procession (Berlin-Mitte)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Berlin Good Friday procession has been organized by the Evangelical Church in the Berlin district of Mitte since 2009, now as an ecumenical procession in memory of Christ's ordeal .

It begins on the morning of Good Friday after the service in the Berlin Cathedral and leads from the Schlossplatz in front of the Berlin Cathedral to churches and places of remembrance in Berlin-Mitte to the Gendarmenmarkt . The procession goes on in silence, accompanied only by bangs. A green cross is carried, which is three meters high and weighs about a hundredweight and is carried by six people. The cross is reminiscent of the triumphal crosses in medieval churches; the green color used to be the color of love: the cross thus becomes a symbol of triumph over death in resurrection .

The Berlin Good Friday procession - following on from tradition - like the early medieval Stations of the Cross, has seven stations , the number of which relates to the Passion of Jesus , in a different interpretation to the seven hours of the Liturgy of the Hours . The silence symbolizes solidarity with the pain and suffering of Christ and the world; Suffering is not "talked away". The tonewoods as a substitute for music are intended to express the horror.

Processional order

The processional regulations stipulate:

  1. Berlin Cathedral
  2. Marienkirche
  3. Nikolaikirche
  4. Schlossplatz
  5. Friedrichswerder Church
  6. St. Hedwig's Cathedral
  7. French cathedral

At the individual stations, parts of the Passion of Jesus from the New Testament are read out and stanzas of the song O Head full of blood and wounds are sung. In 2015, in the theme year “Reformation and Politics”, politicians were invited to join in and read reminder texts at the stations.
