Karina Maruyama ( Japanese 丸山 桂 里 奈 , Maruyama Karina ; born March 26, 1983 in Ōta , Tokyo ) is a Japanese soccer player on the position of the striker. With the Japanese national team , she won the 2011 World Cup in Germany.
She received football training at the Tōkyō Gas Soccer School . During her middle school years she played for Yomiuri Menina, the youth team of the women's league ( L. League ) Yomiuri Beleza . In 1997 she took part in the 18th National Women's Football Championship. After switching to high school, she had to leave Menina and played for the school football club. She later attended Japanese Sport University and was accepted into the Japan Women 's National Football Team in 2002.
After graduating from university, she joined TEPCO in 2005 and became a member of the TEPCO Mareeze women's workers' union . In the very first year she was named newcomer of the year. In 2009 she left the team and the company and played for Philadelphia Independence in the USA in 2010 . On September 17 of the same year, however, she moved back to Japan for the team JEF United Ichihara Chiba Ladies.
During the 2011 women's soccer world championship , she scored the winning goal in the quarter-finals to make it 1-0 against the German women's national soccer team , which was then eliminated from the tournament. The goal was then nominated for the “Goal of the Tournament” election.
Maruyama was also part of the Japanese squad for the London Olympics . But she was only in the starting line-up in the 0-0 win against South Africa in the preliminary round. In the final, lost 1: 2 against the USA , she was substituted on in the 86th minute, but could not turn the game around, so that she and her team won the silver medal.
