The Informationstechnische Gesellschaft (ITG) was founded in 1954 under the name of the Nachrichtenentechnische Gesellschaft (NTG) as a specialist society of the VDE (Association of Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies) . It currently has around 10,000 personal members.
The ITG is the technical scientific association of scientists and engineers working in information technology. It forms the platform for the exchange of scientific knowledge in the comprehensive area of information technology and thus promotes the dissemination of information technology knowledge. To this end, it organizes international and national specialist conferences, workshops and discussion sessions, develops guidelines and recommendations and promotes scientific publications. An important task is also the participation in research and development projects as well as the cooperation with European and non-European specialist societies.
In addition to technical and scientific topics, the ITG also deals with questions of technology design, the social acceptance of technology and applications, and the scientific training of the next generation.
Departments
According to its wide range of work, ITG is divided into 7 departments:
- Services and Applications
- Media technology
- Audio technology
- Communication technology

Each specialist area comprises several specialist committees, each of which forms specialist groups to deal with specific topics. There are currently over 1200 members working in the committees and specialist groups.
