Hans Alex Marko (born February 24, 1925 in Kronstadt , Transylvania ; † September 12, 2017 in Graefelfing ) was a German communications engineer and professor at the Technical University of Munich .

Life

Hans Marko grew up in Transylvania and graduated from school in 1943 with the Matura . From 1946 to 1951 he studied communications engineering at the TH Stuttgart , where he received his doctorate in 1953 under Richard Feldtkeller . He then worked as a development engineer and later as a department head at Standard Elektrik Lorenz AG, where he developed one of the first pulse code modulation systems in Germany. He also gave lectures at the universities of Stuttgart and Karlsruhe. In 1961 he wrote his habilitation thesis on the use of telegraph channels for the transmission of information .

In 1962, Hans Marko succeeded Hans Piloty as holder of the chair for communications engineering at the TH Munich. He worked successfully in teaching and research until his retirement in 1993. He supervised 9 habilitations and 75 doctorates.

The scientific areas worked on by him and his institute included:

  • Application of system theory in technical, biological and cybernetic systems and their multi-dimensional expansion for image processing and pattern recognition
  • Further development of Shannon's information theory to a bidirectional-oriented communication theory
  • Theoretical research and practical implementation of high-speed digital transmission systems via cables and fiber optics.

Hans Marko was the owner of numerous patents, author of several books and more than a hundred publications.
