Wolfgang Kaiser (computer scientist)

Wolfgang Kaiser (born February 22, 1923 in Schöntal an der Jagst ; † March 26, 2005 ) was a German communications engineer , computer scientist and professor at the University of Stuttgart .

Life

Immediately after graduating from high school in Tübingen in 1941, he was drafted into the Wehrmacht and in 1943 was taken prisoner in the USA, where he was able to expand his language skills and also read books on mathematics and technology. After his return he studied electrical engineering at the TH Stuttgart from 1947 to 1951 and received his doctorate in 1954 or 1955 under Richard Feldtkeller .

From 1954 he was a development engineer for television at Standard Elektrik Lorenz (SEL) in Stuttgart, later head of the laboratory for telegraphy and railway signal systems and then director for development and research in the data technology division. After his departure, Kaiser was a member of the SEL's supervisory board until Alcatel took over .

In 1967, Wolfgang Kaiser was appointed to the chair for telecommunications systems at the University of Stuttgart, today's Institute for Communications (INÜ) with the focus on research in the field of wired digital transmission of voice, text and data and broadband communication on copper or fiber optic cables. He later became dean and a member of the Senate and the Board of Directors. He retired in autumn 1992 and was succeeded by Joachim Speidel on the chair of communications .

Kaiser also strongly advocated the political framework for the introduction of the broadband cable network. Participation in many specialist committees, including in the "Commission for the expansion of the technical communication system" of the then Federal Ministry for Post and Telecommunications, as member and chairman of the scientific advisory board of the Heinrich Hertz Institute Berlin, as chairman of the research committee of the Münchner Kreis for more than 20 Years as well as chairman of the project council of the research association Medientechnik Südwest. Member of the board and chairman of the information technology company. Head of the telematica congress in Stuttgart. Since 1982 he has been a full member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences .
