Karl (Hohenzollern-Haigerloch)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Karl von Hohenzollern-Haigerloch (* 1588 in Haigerloch ; † March 9, 1634 in Überlingen ) was the third count of Hohenzollern-Haigerloch .

Life

Karl was the second son of Count Christoph von Hohenzollern-Haigerloch from his marriage to Katharina († after 1608), daughter of Baron Christoph von Welsperg. After the early death of his father, he was raised by his uncles Eitel Friedrich I von Hohenzollern-Hechingen and Karl von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen and initially embarked on a military career. He married Countess Rosamunde von Ortenburg († 1636) in Haigerloch on March 25, 1618. The marriage remained childless.

Karl followed his brother Johann Christoph in 1620 as Count of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen zu Haigerloch. In January 1633 Karl fled from his castle in Haigerloch from the unrest of the Thirty Years War with a retinue of 21 people to Hohenzollern Castle , which was soon occupied by the Swedes. Count Karl was granted free retreat and went to the imperial camp in Überlingen to seek help for the relief of the castle without success. He died on March 9, 1634 in the local Gasthaus zur Krone.

Since he had remained without an heir, the Hohenzollern-Haigerloch line died out with him. After the establishment of the Hereditary Association in 1575, his land fell to Prince Johann von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen .
