Karl Grumpelt (* 1920 in Pirna ; † November 23, 1998 ibid) was a German museum director in Pirna and is now an honorary citizen of this city.

Life

Grumpelt was the son of the Pirna Sparkasse director Erwin Grumpelt. He initially trained as a savings bank employee and took part in World War II as a soldier. After returning to the war in the spring of 1945, he initially worked again as a bank clerk and, among other things, managed the savings bank branches in Zschieren and Lohmen .

In his free time, Grumpelt dealt with questions of Pirna's history as part of his work in the Kulturbund . Through the collaboration in the Kulturbund, I became acquainted with Alfred Wagner, head of the Pirna City Museum, and Hermann Schreiter, formerly administrator of the Museum of the Mountain Association for Saxon Switzerland .

At the suggestion of Alfred Wagner, Grumpelt applied for the position of research assistant in the Pirna City Museum , which he took up in July 1953. In 1955 he took over the management of the museum.

While working, Grumpelt studied museology in Berlin. In his diploma thesis he examined the industrial development of the district of Pirna using the example of the artificial silk factory in Pirna. From this diploma thesis, the Polytechnic Department of Artificial Silk Pirna was created in 1960, which was unique in Germany at the time. The department shaped the profile of the city museum until it was closed in 1984. Grumpelt graduated from another history degree at the Humboldt University in Berlin in 1964 with a degree in history .

Grumpelt ran the Pirna City Museum until 1986 under sometimes difficult conditions. Among other things, the spatial situation with regard to the appropriate storage of the museum property was problematic. The structural condition of the museum deteriorated due to a lack of investment so that the museum had to be closed for renovation work in 1984. The reopening did not take place until 1993. At the age of 66, Grumpelt resigned from the museum management in 1986.

After the fall of the Wall he was a founding member of the New Pirna History Association. In 1989 it was decided to demolish the historic "Teufelserkerhaus" building in the old town . Some militant Pirna citizens, among them Karl Grumpelt, prevented the demolition in the citizens' movement "Save Pirna". The devil's dungeon has been restored today and houses u. a. a restaurant.

In 1995, on the occasion of his 75th birthday, Grumpelt was granted honorary citizenship of his hometown Pirna. In Pirna there is a memorial plaque for him in the cloister courtyard between the town museum and the monastery church.
