The old town is the historic center of Pirna , the district town of the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district .

Location and demarcation

The old town of Pirna is located on the left, southern bank of the Elbe - directly below the point where the river coming from Bohemia leaves its narrow valley in Saxon Switzerland and enters the broad Elbe basin. It stretches between the Děčín – Dresden-Neustadt railway in the north, Dr.-Wilhelm-Külz-Strasse in the south, Grohmannstrasse in the west and the mountainside at the foot of Sonnenstein Castle , which towers over the old town of Pirna, in the east. It extends about 500 meters in an east-west direction and about 300 meters from north to south.

Inner structure

The market is at its center. A largely almost right-angled system of alleys and small streets opens up the old town of Pirna; Parts of it are designated as a pedestrian zone . In the area immediately around the Marienkirche , the main Evangelical Lutheran church in the city, the street system is irregular.

In earlier times a city wall surrounded the old town of Pirna. It had five exits: the gate in the north, the Elbe or Brüdertor in the northwest, the Dohna Gate in the southwest, the Ober or Steinische Gate in the southeast and the ship gate in the northeast. In front of the three last-mentioned gates were three historic suburbs : the Schifftorvorstadt , the Obertorvorstadt and the Dohnaische Vorstadt . In contrast, the Wilhelminian West suburb is younger . To the north is Copitz on the opposite bank of the Elbe.

Sights and facilities

The famous sights in the old town include the Marienkirche, the building ensemble around the market square with the town hall, the Peter Ulrich House and the Canaletto House, the Erlpeter Fountain and the Devil's Dungeon.

The most important central urban facility in the old town is the Pirna town hall in the middle of the market. In addition, the Pirna City Library and the City Museum are located in the old town . The Pirna Iron Chamber was located in today's city hall at Markt 10 until the 17th century .
